You’re Called to do Hard Things

Galatians 6:9, ESV

And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.

Ephesians 2:10, ESV

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

The Greek word translated works in Ephesians 2:10 means “labor” and “toil.”

Work.

Labor.

Toil.

We’re called to do hard things.

In fact, we were created to do hard things.

I’ve been thoroughly convicted recently about giving too much voice to the hardship of what God has called us to do, rather than the honor of what God has called us to do. And, as I listened to a podcast recently in which the person being interviewed mentioned how difficult it was to do the work God had called them to do, I realized something: every single person who follows Jesus is called to do hard things

Just look at the Bible. I can’t think of a single person in the whole of scripture who was called to do something easy. Their names didn’t make it onto the pages of scripture because of the ease of their callings, their names made it onto the pages of scripture because they persevered and trusted God through the difficulty of their callings. Their stories inspire and teach us because they were overwhelmingly difficult, and they saw the power of God as a result.

We think our kind of hard is a special kind of hard because it’s the hard we are living. But each person's hard is hard :) Each person's difficulty is unique to them—and matters to God.

So, if you’re struggling today because you’re in the midst of something difficult, then be encouraged that you’re not alone. Your difficult things look different than mine, but they’re all seen, known, and valuable beyond measure to the One who prepared them long before our existence. Your difficult things will do mighty things—within you and through you.

So keep going. Don’t grow weary. Don’t give up. Your perseverance will be worth it, both on earth and in heaven.
