What We Lean on Might Come as a Surprise

Proverbs 3:5-6, NIV

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

Sometimes we don’t know what we’re leaning on until it’s kicked out from under us.

Our understanding.

A person.

Money.

Comfortability.

Health.

Position.

And on and on and on.

And sometimes we don’t know what we’re leaning on until God asks us to give it up—like the rich young man we talked about last week.

So, if God has allowed something to be kicked out from under you, so to speak—and it’s caused you to wobble or fall flat on your face—then He might just be wanting to reveal to you what you’ve been leaning on.

Or, if God has asked you to give something up—and the thought of that obedience produces panic or fear—then He might just be wanting to reveal to you what you’ve been leaning on.

And He might just be wanting to teach you to lean on Him.

I’ve been there so many times—and I’m sure there will be more to come.

So if this is you, embrace the wobble.

Take the journey.

Choose obedience.

Because, on the other side of this momentary discomfort, will come a steadier, firmer foundation—and a sense of peace and freedom unlike anything you’ve known before.

The freedom and firmness of learning to lean only on God will always be worth the discomfort of getting there.
