What DO You Have?

Mark 6:35-38 (ESV)

And when it grew late, his disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the hour is now late. Send them away to go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.” But he answered them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said to him, “Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give it to them to eat?” And he said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they had found out, they said, “Five, and two fish.”

And Jesus multiplied those five loves and two fish to feed 5,000 men, plus women and children.

When we see a need, we so often immediately see our lack. But it’s as if God says, “do a little exploring and find out what you do have—and then put it in my hands.”

When we put what we have into God’s hands, He stretches it further than we could ever dream. He multiplies what we have, and then dispenses it through us! It’s a transfer of hands—what’s in ours, into God’s, back into ours to be given into the hands of others.

And it all starts by finding out what we do have.

A few years ago, I felt like the Lord told me that so many of His people believe they have nothing to bring to the table. So many people essentially believe they have nothing with which to “feed the crowd.” But this is not truth! God has placed something(s) in the hand of each person which He desires to use in ways far beyond our ability to think or imagine. It’s not going to seem like much to us—and it definitely won’t seem like enough to feed the crowd—but all God asks is that we put it in His hands.

So let’s end with this challenge: will we take the time to stop and see what we do have that God might be waiting to use to meet the needs of those around us?
