These are But the Outskirts of His Ways

‭‭Job‬ ‭26‬:‭14,‬ ‭ESV‬‬ (Job speaking)

“Behold, these are but the outskirts of his ways, and how small a whisper do we hear of him! But the thunder of his power who can understand?”

Psalm 8:3-4, ESV

When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?

John 21:25, NIV

Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.

‭‭Romans‬ ‭11‬:‭33‬, ‭ESV

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!‬‬

What little we know of God’s ways is minuscule—barely even measurable—compared to the whole of Who He is.

A single star within a universe of stars.

A single grain of sand among oceans of sand.

A single chapter within an endless and ageless story.

How unfathomable it is, then, that this God allows Himself—and desires!—to be known by us at all. And how unfathomable it is that this God knows us!

So when we don’t understand the ways of God in our lives, in the Bible, or in the world, we must remember that God is God—and we are not. His greatness no one can fathom (Psalm 145:3).

We don’t trust God because we understand Him, we trust God because we know Him.

And we don’t accept God's ways because we understand them, we accept God's ways because we trust Him.

Oh Lord, thank You for who You are! Thank You that You know us and desire to be known by us. Help us to trust You more and more with each passing day. Amen.
