‭‭‭‭Marah is Not the Final Word

Exodus 15:22-25, ESV

Then Moses made Israel set out from the Red Sea, and they went into the wilderness of Shur. They went three days in the wilderness and found no water. When they came to Marah, they could not drink the water of Marah because it was bitter; therefore it was named Marah. And the people grumbled against Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?” And he cried to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a log, and he threw it into the water, and the water became sweet. There the Lord made for them a statute and a rule, and there he tested them,

The Israelites were in desperate need of water—a matter of life and death—when they finally came upon the waters of Marah. 

Finally. 

Their water in the desert.

Their provision from the Lord.

Or so they thought—because the water they came upon, as it turned out, was undrinkable. 

What they thought was provision, turned out to be bitter.

It was devastating—and confusing. It might have even seemed like God was toying with them.

Have you ever felt like God was toying with you?

Have you ever been in a situation of desperate need—and come to what you just knew was your miracle—only to discover it wasn’t what you thought?

It’s devastating. 

It’s confusing.

And it can feel like God is toying with us.

But this is when we have to make a choice—a choice to grumble against God, or cry out to Him—to choose despair or to choose trust.

And trust passes the test.

You see, God was not toying with the Israelites, He was testing them. 

And God does not toy with us. 

He tests us—to refine us and grow us and teach us to trust.

When the thing we thought was our miracle turns out bitter, then God's not done yet. Marah is not the final word.

So don’t lose hope at the bitter water—and don’t let the bitter water become the end of your story. 

The sweet water is coming. 

The miracle is on the way. 

And God will turn what was once bitter into something sweet.
