Deuteronomy 8:17-18, ESV
Beware lest you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.’ You shall remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your fathers, as it is this day.”
1 Corinthians 4:7b, ESV
…What do you have that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it?
Ephesians 2:10, ESV
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
James 1:17a, ESV
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above
In some seasons—especially those of doubt, insecurity, and great need—we are acutely aware of our all-encompassing reliance upon God. We are aware that He is the Bestower of every good gift and provided need in our lives.
But then there are other seasons—seasons in which some of that doubt, insecurity, and great need is relieved—when we must be purposely intentional to remember that everything we have comes straight from the hand of God.
Every opportunity we’ve been given has been just that—given.
Every ability and talent we possess is a divine deposit from the Gift-Giver Himself.
Every success we experience on earth is the divine favor of the Bestower of favor.
Every day we take another breath is a gift from the one who breathes life and has our days sovereignly numbered in His book.
Opportunity, talent, success, and even health can challenge our humility in a unique way—because those things have a very real element of dependence upon stewardship within them.
But all of those things are not derived from us—they are derived from the hand of God.
Even our ambition and ability to steward these things is a gift from God.
It’s easy to remember our dependency upon God when we’re at a low state, but as God raises us up throughout our lives, we must be intentional to remember that it’s all because of—and still depends on—God.
Oh Lord, thank you for the gifts you give us! Help us to be careful not to forget that every good thing we have came from your hand. Help us to continue to steward that which you’ve entrusted to us, never forgetting that even our ability to steward comes from you. Amen.
