Look and See—God is Not Idle

Habakkuk’s Complaint:

Habakkuk 1:3a, ESV

“Why do you make me see iniquity, and why do you idly look at wrong?”

God’s Answer:

Habakkuk 1:5, ESV

Look among the nations, and see; wonder and be astounded. For I am doing a work in your days that you would not believe if told.”

When it appears from our vantage point that God is being idle, we must understand that there’s something we’re not seeing. We must “look” and “see” from a higher perspective—from a heavenly perspective.

Habakkuk poured out his questions and complaints before the Lord, and the Lord answered. The Lord invited him to “look” and “see” from a perspective which revealed that not only was God not being idle, but he was in fact “doing a work.”

And the same is true in our lives.

God is never not working. He is never idle. He is always doing a work—in our lives, in our communities, in our nation, and around the world.

Always.

And, although His thoughts and His ways are higher than ours, He invites us to get a glimpse into those thoughts and those ways if we’ll just bring our questions to Him. He doesn’t show us all the details—because we wouldn’t believe it even if He told us;)—but He does give us a glimpse. He heightens our vantage point and gives us a higher perspective when we cry out to Him.

So be encouraged today that:

  1. God is never idle. He’s doing a work on your behalf as we speak.

  2. God will invite you to look and see if you’ll bring your questions to Him.

Oh Lord, thank You that You invite us to see from a higher perspective when we bring our questions before you. Give us the courage to bring those questions to Your feet, and remind us that You are always working on our behalf, even when it looks like nothing is happening. Amen.
