Genesis 2:5-6, 8-9a, ESV
When no bush of the field was yet in the land and no small plant of the field had yet sprung up—for the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the land, and there was no man to work the ground, and a mist was going up from the land and was watering the whole face of the ground—
...
And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed. And out of the ground the Lord God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food.
Matthew 13:31-32, NIV
He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.”
Galatians 6:7, ESV
Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.
Everything starts with a seed.
Every harvest starts with seeds. Every tree and plant and flower and fruit—they all start with seeds.
Even God started with seeds.
So we have to be content to start with seeds.
Big things start small.
Big change starts small.
We must not despise the days of small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin (Zechariah 4:10).
What we want to grow, we have to sow.
What do you want to see in your life, your home, your workplace, your community?
Start sowing that thing.
If we want to see peace, love, honor, kindness, etc. in our relationships, we have to make sure we're sowing seeds of peace, love, honor, and kindness.
If we want to see blessing in our lives, we have to make sure we're sowing seeds of blessing—through our words, actions, time, money, etc.
If we sow seeds of peace, we will reap the fruit of peace.
If we sow seeds of honor, we will reap the fruit of honor.
If we sow seeds of blessing, we will reap the fruit of blessing.
What do you not want to see grow in your life?
Stop sowing that thing.
We can't sow seeds of turmoil and discord and expect to reap the fruit of peace.
We can't sow seeds of dishonor and expect to reap the fruit of honor.
We can't sow seeds of stinginess (in our words, money, time, etc.) and expect to reap the fruit of blessing.
What we sow will grow.
You may be the only person in your home or office sowing seeds of honor, but keep sowing—because you will reap the fruit of what you sow. It’s a promise of God, as sure as the laws of nature.
And small seeds grow big things.
Every big thing—and every big change—started with a seed.
Oh Lord, thank you for your promises. Help us to purposefully sow what we want to see grow—in our lives, our homes, our workplaces, and our communities. Amen.
