God Will Multiply What We Give Him
Genesis 22:15-17a, ESV
And the angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven and said, “By myself I have sworn, declares the Lord, because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore.”
Over the last few weeks we’ve been talking about the principles of generosity, not withholding from God what is his, and receiving what we give. Today we’re going to wrap it all up by talking about the biblical principle that God will multiply what we give him.
Glance again at the above passage.
What did God say Abraham did not withhold?
His son—his offspring.
So what did God promise to multiply?
His offspring.
In 1 Samuel 2, Hannah gave her only son to God (after a life of barrenness) to be brought up at the temple, and God multiplied her sacrifice and gave her sons and daughters after this.
In 1 Kings 17, the widow of Zarephath used her last handful of flour and oil to prepare a meal for herself, her son, and Elijah—a meal which she believed would be her last—and God multiplied that flour and oil to feed all of them as long as was needed.
In Nehemiah, the men of the city gave what they had of their time and effort to rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and God multiplied their time and effort to finish that wall in 52 days.
We could go on and on with examples from Scripture.
So what is God calling you to give him that you feel you don’t have enough of?
In our culture today, I believe it often comes down to three main things—time, money, and ability.
Is God asking you to give of your time?
Then God will multiply your time.
Is God asking you to give of your money?
Then God will multiply your money.
Is God asking you to give of your ability?
Then God will multiply your ability.
God will multiply what we give him.
Oh Lord, thank you for the promises we find in your Word. Please help us be willing to give you whatever you ask from us, and give us the faith to believe that it will be multiplied. Amen.
