Entrusted to God

Psalm 143:8, NIV

Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life.

To you I entrust my life.

David authored Psalm 143 in the midst of a struggle. We know this because he says things throughout this Psalm like listen to my cry for mercy (verse 1), come to my relief (verse 1), the enemy pursues me (verse 3), my spirit grows faint within me (verse 4), and silence my enemies (verse 12).

So in the midst of David’s cry to God, he declares his trust in God—he declares that his life is entrusted into the mighty hands of God.

Likewise, when Peter is talking about Jesus In 1 Peter 2:23, he says this:

When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly.

David entrusted his life to God.

Jesus entrusted his life to God.

And we can entrust our lives to God.

There’s something really cool about the words translated entrust in both of these verses. In Hebrew, the more accurate translation for the words which have been translated to you I entrust my life would be to you I lift my soul. In the Greek, the word translated entrusted in the verse above means to hand over

When we entrust our lives to God, we hand it over—we lift it up—to him. It’s a transferring of the burden from our own shoulders onto the shoulders of the mighty, sovereign God we serve.

Oh Lord, thank you. Please help us to hand our burden over to you. To you we entrust our lives. Amen.
