But I Will Sing

Psalm‬ ‭59‬:‭16-17,‬ ‭ESV‬‬

But I will sing of your strength; I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning. For you have been to me a fortress and a refuge in the day of my distress. O my Strength, I will sing praises to you, for you, O God, are my fortress, the God who shows me steadfast love.

David wrote this psalm during the time when king Saul had sent men to surround his house in order to take his life.

Surrounded by enemies, David sang.

When despair and defeat was literally creeping at his doorstep, David sang.

David’s song had nothing to do with himself, but everything to do with the God he knew—the God whose strength and steadfast love had been his fortress and refuge in the day of his distress.

When we feel as though we are surrounded, may we sing.

When we feel as though despair and defeat are creeping at our doorstep, may we sing.

May we sing because of who God is and what he’s done before. May we sing because…

His strength never fails,

His steadfast love never ceases,

His mercies are new every morning,

His grace is enough,

His peace never comes to an end.

Praise changes the atmosphere around us—and praise changes the atmosphere within us.

Oh Lord, as we celebrate Thanksgiving this week, may the posture of our hearts be filled with praise and thanksgiving, no matter what the current circumstances of our lives look like. We love you, and we praise you for who you are, who you’ve been to us, and who we know you will continue to be! Amen.
