A Constant Call to Intimacy

Revelation 3:20, ESV

Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.

The knock of Jesus is the voice of Jesus.

Notice that Jesus didn’t say, “if anyone hears my knock and opens the door.” Instead, He uses the analogy of knocking and then says, “if anyone hears my voice and opens the door.”

Jesus is speaking to us constantly, repeatedly, all the time—as if He’s knocking at our door.

There are many reasons we may not answer our door when someone knocks. We’re exhausted. We’re distracted with something else. We’re complacent (we don’t really care that they’re knocking). Or we can even be purposely ignoring the person knocking.

The same is true when Jesus knocks on our door.

Sometimes we’re exhausted.

Sometimes we’re distracted.

Sometimes we’re complacent.

And sometimes we’re purposely ignoring Him.

But Jesus keeps knocking. Jesus keeps speaking.

It’s so humbling to think that Jesus stands knocking at our door—speaking our language, trying to get our attention—and all for the purpose of relationship.

To eat with us.

To talk with us.

To spend time with us.

Jesus is constantly calling us to relationship and intimacy with Him. Are we answering His knock? Are we hearing His voice? Are we dining with Him daily?

May we take time this week to stop and listen for the voice of Jesus knocking at our door. Whatever it is that keeps us from dining with Him, may we recognize and remove it. May there be nothing which would prevent us from experiencing the depth of relationship with Jesus that we have access to right here on earth.
